The Haute Route
Chamonix – Zermatt
April 2011
Introduction
The Haute Route is a ski traverse connecting the valley of Chamonix,
home of the Mont Blanc, and Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn,.
Arguably the best hut to hut backcountry ski tour in the world
the haute route offers a challenging and breathtaking experience.
The views are spectacular, the food is delightful and the experience
rewarding. The best time of the season for the haute route is
from early March to late May.
Ability Level
The traverse is around 180km and takes 8 days with many side trips
possible depending on conditions, weather and fitness level of
the participants. Each night is spent in high altitude rustic
huts. Therefore a standard 20lbs/40L. day pack is all you’ll
have to carry. Strong skiing skills are a must, you should be
able to link turns in deep snow, crud, hard pack, steep 35°
slopes, at ease. You should be able to side slip both ways 40°
slopes and execute efficient kick turns on steep terrain. Fitness
level is also very important upwards of 4000f (1800m) or 4 hours
climbs are not unusual. Ice axe and crampons will be use, therefore
previous mountaineering experience is an asset.
